Jamaica's Nationally Determined Contributions
The Government is committed to sustainable development and climate adaptation, this aligns with the broader goals of the Paris Agreement and reinforces the country's resilience to climate change. Here are five climate initiatives that the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) is taking based on Jamaica's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC):
- Energy Sector Transformation Jamaica is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by transforming its energy sector. The country aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind. This ambitious initiative supports cleaner energy generation and promotes energy efficiency across various sectors, helping Jamaica achieve a 25.4% emission reduction target by 2030.
- Forestry and Land-Use Management Recognizing the importance of forests in climate resilience, Jamaica's NDC includes the preservation and expansion of forest cover. The government has pledged to protect critical forest areas and promote reforestation, contributing to carbon sequestration. This initiative not only reduces emissions but also safeguards biodiversity and improves air and water quality for communities.
- Single-Use Plastics Ban and Waste Management Jamaica's single-use plastics ban is a crucial step in reducing pollution and enhancing waste management. Since 2019, the ban has phased out plastic bags, straws, and styrofoam products. Additionally, the GOJ is exploring waste-to-energy projects, such as biogas from animal waste, to further reduce emissions and improve waste management practices across the country.
- Climate-Resilient Agriculture The GOJ is implementing sustainable agricultural practices to increase resilience against climate change. This includes initiatives like the Yallahs-Hope River Watershed Management Project, which promotes soil conservation, water-efficient farming, and agroforestry. These measures support food security and reduce vulnerability to climate-related impacts, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.
- Integrated Coastal Management and Flood Control As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Jamaica faces significant climate-related risks such as sea-level rise and coastal erosion. Through integrated coastal management, the GOJ is investing in protective infrastructure, including the construction of groynes and seawalls. These projects aim to protect vulnerable coastlines and communities, thereby enhancing resilience to future climate impacts.
